Teaching About White Privilege
An Interactive Approach

ucf-white-privilege-story.jpg
I created the following activity to teach college freshmen about the concept of white privilege. The activities are based upon the seminal work of Peggy MacIntosh ("White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" and correspond to the step-forward/step-back activity often associated with this text. The interactive nature of the activity and the fact that students do it via assigned identities (avatars) tends to result in fewer instances of student resistance to the lesson and contents. I believe that the activity can be useful for high school students as well as college students. Those using the activity should, however, be well prepared to discuss the issues and engage students in a lively discussion about the issues.
